RECYCLALYSE - New sustainable and recyclable catalytic materials for proton exchange membrane electrolysers

The project »RECYCALYSE« is carried out within the EU Horizon 2020 project. Together with the project partners, new sustainable and recyclable catalytic materials for PEM systems are being developed.

The aim of the Recycalyse project is to reduce the use of critical materials, in particular the platinum metal group and especially iridium, for the future large-scale use of PEM electrolysers. Two approaches are being pursued for this purpose. One is the development of new supported oxygen reduction catalysts with reduced use of iridium at the same or better activity. This will be complemented by the development of recycling processes that enable a high recycling utilization of the critical metals and thus limit the EU's import dependency for these materials despite the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.
